March 24 and 25 (no school for MCPS)

SOLD OUT !

If event is sold out, place your name on waiting list.

If there is enough interest, we may open up a second section during the Spring break week.

Join us for two days of SPACE-inspired fun, on Thursday and Friday, March 24-25 at the Meadowbrook Park Activity Center in Chevy Chase, Md.

We'll build and program space exploration models with Lego Robotics, design and program Mars Rover video games and learn how scientists on earth navigate spacecraft on remote planets by conducting our own human-powered Rover navigation tests.

We'll also launch some rockets, play with The Great Adventure Lab's hand-built, battery-powered hovercraft and learn first hand what it's like to work on space missions from a NASA speaker.

(Scroll down for daily schedule)

Speaker: Eric Lyness, NASA space flight software systems engineer has worked on many missions including The Curiosity Rover's mobile lab SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars), which has been collecting and studying soil samples from the red planet since 2012; LADEE, which explored the lunar exosphere in 2014; MAVEN, the Mars orbiter that is still studying the upper atmosphere of that planet; and the European Space Agency's ExoMars Mission, which is scheduled to launch in 2018. (He's part of the team working on the mission's mass spectrometer MOMA, which stands for Mars Organic Molecule Analyzer ... it will be looking for signs of whether life ever existed on Mars!]

Mr. Lyness is also part of the team working on NASA's proposed DaVinci mission, which seeks to analyze the atmosphere of the planet Venus. You can see him below, with the actual Curiosity Rover in a clean room, before it launched.
